Stampede breaks out at Mahakumbh on Mauni Amavasya, Many Casualties?

A significant stampede occurred at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, during the early hours of January 29, 2025, coinciding with the auspicious day of Mauni Amavasya. Reports indicate that at least 15 people are feared dead, with numerous others injured as a result of the chaos that ensued when a barrier collapsed amidst a massive crowd of devotees seeking to participate in the holy dip known as Amrit Snan.

The stampede reportedly began around 1:00 AM as millions of pilgrims gathered at the Sangam—the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Sarasvati rivers—creating an overwhelming surge of people.

Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of panic, with many individuals trampled underfoot as barriers broke and crowd control measures failed. One witness recounted being trapped in a wave of pushing bodies, leading to several people falling and getting injured.

Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, with ambulances transporting the injured to a central hospital set up within the Mela grounds. Reports from various sources indicate that some individuals were treated for serious injuries, while others were pronounced dead upon arrival at medical facilities.

Following the incident, the traditional Amrit Snan for Mauni Amavasya was postponed by the Akharas (religious sects), who decided against proceeding with their ceremonial dip due to safety concerns. The next scheduled holy dip is now set for February 3 during Basant Panchami.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been briefed on the situation and has called for immediate support measures to assist those affected by this tragic event. Officials are currently assessing the full extent of injuries and casualties resulting from the stampede.

Akanksha Rana, Officer on Special Duty for the Mela, confirmed that while some injuries were reported following the collapse of a barrier, they are still determining the exact number of casualties and injuries.

This year’s Maha Kumbh Mela is particularly significant due to a rare celestial alignment known as Triveni Yog, which occurs once every 144 years, further increasing attendance expectations and the importance of this religious gathering.
