Supreme Court Declares September 11 Holiday For BRICS Summit; November 28 To Be Working Saturday Instead
The Supreme Court of India has declared Friday, September 11, 2026, a holiday for the Court and its Registry in view of arrangements for the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit being held in New Delhi. The decision was approved by the Full Court and notified by the Supreme Court’s Administrative General Branch.
The Supreme Court Registry will also remain closed on Saturday, September 12. With September 13 being Sunday, the arrangement effectively gives the Registry a three-day closure during the summit period.
The decision follows a September 3 Office Memorandum issued by the Department of Personnel and Training directing the closure of Central Government offices in Delhi and New Delhi on September 11 because of the BRICS Summit and the extensive security and logistical arrangements surrounding it.
To compensate for the holiday, the Supreme Court has declared Saturday, November 28, 2026, a full working day. The Registry will function on that Saturday as a regular working day, according to the reported circular.
The BRICS Summit is scheduled to begin in the national capital on September 11, with extensive security and traffic arrangements already in place. Delhi has deployed around 25,000 security personnel, including more than 100 NSG commandos, as leaders and delegations from member and partner countries arrive for the three-day summit.
For advocates and litigants, the immediate takeaway is to account for the September 11–13 closure while planning filings, hearings and Registry-related work. The compensatory working Saturday on November 28 will instead be treated as a full working day by the Supreme Court.
