Suvendu Adhikari is set to become the next Chief Minister of West Bengal
Suvendu Adhikari has been formally elected as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party and is set to become West Bengal’s next Chief Minister following the BJP’s landslide victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. His swearing-in is scheduled for May 9, 2026, at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other BJP leaders.
The West Bengal Assembly elections occurred on April 23 and 29, 2026, with results declared on May 4. BJP secured 206 seats in the 294-member house, surpassing the majority mark of 148 and ending TMC’s 15-year rule under Mamata Banerjee.
Adhikari, a former TMC leader, defeated Banerjee in Nandigram (2021) and Bhabanipur (2026), emerging as BJP’s frontrunner. On May 8, Union Minister Amit Shah announced his selection at a Kolkata meeting. As of May 8 evening, he is the designated CM but not yet sworn in.
