US Midterm Elections 2026: Democrats Retake Senate and House in Major Setback for Donald Trump

The United States midterm elections have delivered a major political setback to President Donald Trump, with Democrats making significant gains across the country and taking control of the US Senate. The results are reshaping the balance of political power in Washington and raising questions about the direction of Trump’s administration during the remaining two years of his presidential term.

The November 3 elections covered all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate contests, alongside gubernatorial and state legislative elections. The outcome is being closely watched because it will determine how much congressional support the president has for his domestic and foreign policy agenda.

Democrats secured an important victory in North Carolina, where former governor Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley to flip a Republican-held Senate seat. Democratic victories in Georgia and New Hampshire also strengthened the party’s position in the Senate.

The Senate result marks a significant change from the Republican majority that existed before Election Day. Democratic control could reshape congressional priorities, influence legislative negotiations and increase scrutiny of the Trump administration.

The economy emerged as one of the defining issues of the election. Rising living costs, persistent inflation and concerns about household finances featured prominently in voters’ decisions. The war involving Iran and its impact on energy prices also became an important issue during the campaign.

According to an Associated Press voter poll, approximately three-quarters of voters described themselves as angry or dissatisfied with the country’s direction. The findings highlighted widespread public concerns about economic conditions, government accountability and the administration’s priorities.

The election also produced significant victories in traditionally Republican states. Democrats made gains in Texas, Ohio, Iowa and South Carolina, demonstrating that several closely watched contests extended beyond the traditional battleground states.

In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Senate contest, while Democratic candidate Annie Andrews defeated Republican Darline Graham in South Carolina. These victories contributed to the broader shift in the balance of power in the Senate.

The gubernatorial elections also delivered notable developments. Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican incumbent Greg Abbott in Texas, while Keisha Lance Bottoms secured victory in Georgia, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US state. Florida, meanwhile, elected Republican Byron Donalds as its first Black Republican governor.

President Trump responded to the Republican losses by arguing that he would have won decisively had he personally appeared on the ballot. His statement came as the election results raised questions about the political consequences of his administration’s economic and foreign policy decisions.

The change in Senate control is expected to have substantial implications for the administration. Democrats will have greater influence over legislation, congressional investigations and the confirmation of presidential nominees, including federal judicial appointments.

However, the final balance of power in the House of Representatives remains an important part of the developing election picture. Reuters reported that Democrats had flipped at least eight Republican seats and were on course to take control, while the Associated Press said the House outcome was still too early to call at the time of its latest report.

The 2026 midterm elections therefore represent a significant turning point in American politics. With Democrats taking the Senate and making substantial gains in the House, the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency could involve greater congressional opposition, difficult legislative negotiations and intensified scrutiny of the administration.

Reporting status: November 4, 2026. House control was not yet conclusively established in the latest AP report.
