Several killed in explosion in Crans Montana, Switzerland
An explosion at a bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, killed at least 10 people and injured 10 others during New Year’s Eve celebrations. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time at Le Constellation bar, with over 100 people inside.
The blast, of unknown origin, sparked a massive fire that engulfed the building in the upscale Alpine ski resort town. Swiss police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion confirmed multiple fatalities and injuries, but investigators are not treating it as terrorism. Hospitals in the region reported being overwhelmed with burn victims.
Authorities cordoned off the area, imposed a no-fly zone, and deployed firefighters and medical teams to control the blaze and aid victims. Rescue efforts continued into the morning, with a police press briefing scheduled for 10 a.m. local time.
Crans-Montana, in Wallis canton about two hours from Bern, is a luxury ski destination popular with tourists during the holiday season. The tragedy has overshadowed New Year’s festivities in the resort known for its vibrant nightlife.
