Fatalities reported after Mount Dukono eruption in Indonesia
Mount Dukono, an active volcano on Indonesia’s Halmahera island, erupted recently, resulting in three confirmed fatalities among hikers in a restricted no-go zone. The victims included two Singaporean men (aged 30 and 27) and one local Indonesian woman from Ternate.
The eruption occurred around 7:41 a.m. local time on May 8, 2026, sending ash 10 kilometers high and trapping a group of hikers despite prior warnings and a climbing ban since April 17. Rescue efforts evacuated most survivors (including 15 sent to hospitals), but the three bodies remain unrecovered due to ongoing eruptions and hazardous conditions.
Authorities, led by North Halmahera police chief Erlichson Pasaribu, reported all surviving hikers accounted for by late May 8, with porters aiding recovery efforts amid continued volcanic activity. No additional fatalities have been confirmed as of the latest updates.
