Left Democratic Front loses power in Kerala after decade-long rule

The Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by CPI(M), has indeed lost power in Kerala following the 2026 assembly election results, ending their decade-long rule under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a sweeping victory, projected to win over 100 seats in the 140-member assembly, while LDF was reduced to around 35 seats from 99 in 2021. This marks the first time since 1977 that Left parties hold no state government in India, signaling a national decline for the Left.

Strong anti-incumbency against LDF’s governance, including issues like state debt, jobs, and relations with the central government, drove the shift. UDF’s united campaign and focus on change resonated with voters, restoring Kerala’s tradition of alternating governments every five years.

Pinarayi Vijayan’s tenure ends after two terms, with LDF losing even traditional strongholds like Kannur. VD Satheesan emerges as the frontrunner for UDF’s next Chief Minister, backed by IUML, though Congress high command will decide amid internal dynamics.

BJP’s NDA gained a few seats (around 3), expanding its footprint slightly. The result highlights voter fatigue after LDF’s historic 2021 re-election and sets a new phase for Kerala’s politics.
