Turkey detains over 1,100 as Erdogan blames ‘evil’ opposition for protests

In Turkey, over 1,100 individuals have been detained during ongoing protests that erupted following the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. The demonstrations began on March 19, 2025, after Imamoglu was taken into custody on corruption charges, which many view as politically motivated. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has characterized the protests as a “wave of violence” instigated by opposition parties, particularly the Republican People’s Party (CHP), and has labeled their actions as “evil” and “malevolent”.

The protests have seen significant participation across various cities, with thousands gathering nightly to express their discontent. Despite the largely peaceful nature of many demonstrations, clashes have occurred, leading to police using tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters. Erdogan has accused the opposition of inciting violence and disrupting public order, while opposition leaders assert that the government’s actions are an attempt to suppress dissent and maintain control.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that 1,133 arrests had been made as of March 24, with ongoing calls from opposition activists for further demonstrations. The unrest reflects deepening political tensions in Turkey, as Imamoglu’s detention is seen as an effort to eliminate a significant rival ahead of the upcoming presidential elections in 2028.
