19-Year-Old Arrested in Illinois Over Alleged Plot to Attack Hindu Place of Worship

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in the US state of Illinois over an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting that could have targeted a Hindu place of worship in Aurora, near Chicago. The arrest followed an investigation into threatening electronic communications and an alleged manifesto containing white supremacist and extremist views.

The suspect, identified as Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, Illinois, was arrested on October 11, 2026. According to the Palatine Police Department, investigators believe he may have been preparing to carry out the attack that same day. However, authorities have stated that the specific intended place of worship has not yet been conclusively confirmed.

The investigation began after an individual reported receiving disturbing messages from the suspect. According to investigators and prosecutors, the communications included a document outlining an alleged mass-shooting plan, along with images of a rifle, ammunition magazines, body armour and other tactical equipment.

Police said the document, titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto),” contained white supremacist and extremist statements, including references to violence against people of South Asian heritage, particularly those of Indian descent. Prosecutors also cited accounts from the suspect’s co-workers who reported that he had expressed racist views and spoken about killing Indian people.

During a search of the suspect’s residence, investigators recovered a rifle, multiple loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and tactical equipment. Authorities also reported finding a tactical vest with body armour and a patch displaying imagery associated with white supremacist extremism.

According to US media reports citing prosecutors and court documents, the suspect may have travelled to the Aurora area on October 11 with a firearm and ammunition. Reports also indicate that the weapon allegedly malfunctioned. Investigators are continuing to establish the precise sequence of events and determine the intended target.

Paporakis faces felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawfully possessing a weapon. Following a court hearing on October 14, a judge ordered him detained while the case proceeds. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 30.

The Palatine Police Department has been working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies as the investigation continues. Authorities have also notified the Aurora Police Department, which coordinated outreach to Hindu places of worship in the area to inform them of the potential threat.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Hindu temples and the wider Indian-American community amid allegations of racially motivated extremism. Community representatives have welcomed the intervention by law enforcement and urged people to report credible threats of violence.

India’s Consulate General in Chicago also welcomed the timely action taken by US authorities, stating that it was in contact with members of the Indian diaspora and closely monitoring developments.

Police have said that the investigation remains active, including an assessment of whether additional charges may be warranted. The suspect’s alleged plans and the precise circumstances surrounding the potential attack remain subject to the ongoing investigation and judicial proceedings.
