Donald Trump and Xi Jinping discuss trade, AI, and Iran
Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are set to discuss trade, artificial intelligence, and Iran as part of a broader effort to stabilize U.S.-China ties. The talks are also expected to touch on Taiwan, tariffs, nuclear issues, and a possible extension of the critical minerals/trade truce.
The reported trade agenda includes mutual trade and investment forums, possible Chinese purchases of Boeing aircraft, U.S. agricultural products, and energy, plus talks on extending the rare-earths/minerals truce. Some reports also say Beijing wants guarantees that the tariff dispute will ease further.
U.S. officials have said they are concerned about advanced AI models being developed in China and want a communication channel to reduce the risk of conflict or miscalculation. China, meanwhile, is reportedly interested in looser U.S. technology export controls.
Iran is a major item because Washington wants Beijing to use its leverage as a key customer for Iranian oil to pressure Tehran, especially around shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The discussions are being framed as part of a wider regional and strategic bargaining process involving Iran, Taiwan, and trade.
The meeting appears aimed less at a single deal and more at preventing escalation while negotiating leverage on multiple fronts at once. If the sides agree on even limited trade relief or an AI communications channel, that would still be a meaningful de-escalation step.
