IMD Warns of Thunderstorms and High Winds in Delhi-NCR; Residents Advised to Exercise Caution

Weather Department Issues Alert for Rain, Lightning, and Gusty Winds as Western Disturbance Brings Relief from Heat

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, light rainfall, and strong gusty winds that could disrupt normal life across the region. The warning comes as a fresh western disturbance influences weather conditions over northwestern India, bringing a significant change from the recent spell of intense heat.

According to the IMD, the region is expected to experience partly cloudy skies followed by thunderstorms, with wind speeds of around 40–50 km/h and the possibility of stronger gusts in isolated areas. Light to moderate rainfall may accompany the storm activity, leading to localized waterlogging, reduced visibility, and temporary traffic disruptions.

The weather system is expected to provide welcome relief from soaring temperatures that had gripped the national capital in recent days. The IMD forecasts comparatively cooler conditions, with temperatures remaining below recent highs due to cloud cover and rainfall.

In recent days, parts of Delhi-NCR have already witnessed severe weather, including dust storms, heavy rain, and powerful winds that disrupted road traffic and affected flight operations. Authorities are therefore advising residents to remain vigilant as fresh thunderstorms could produce sudden changes in weather conditions.

The IMD has urged people to avoid sheltering under trees or near weak structures during thunderstorms, secure loose outdoor objects, and exercise caution while driving due to reduced visibility and slippery roads. Commuters are also advised to monitor weather updates before traveling, as localized delays may occur because of strong winds and rain.

The alert is part of a broader spell of unsettled weather affecting several parts of northwestern India, with thunderstorms and gusty winds forecast for neighboring states as well. Meteorologists attribute the changing conditions to a western disturbance interacting with favorable moisture and atmospheric instability over the region.

While the forecast offers respite from extreme summer temperatures, authorities emphasize that thunderstorms and high winds can pose safety risks. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official weather bulletins and follow advisories issued by local administration and emergency services until conditions improve.
