Meta has recently clarified claims that it forced users to follow President Donald Trump on Facebook and Instagram

Meta has recently clarified claims that it forced users to follow President Donald Trump on Facebook and Instagram following his inauguration. Many users reported that their accounts automatically began following Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and First Lady Melania Trump without their consent, leading to confusion and frustration across social media platforms.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone stated that the changes users observed were part of standard procedures during the transition of presidential accounts from one administration to another. He emphasized that users who had previously followed the official @POTUS account would continue to follow it after the account switched to Trump’s administration. “People were not made to automatically follow any of the official Facebook or Instagram accounts for the President, Vice President, or First Lady,” Stone explained, adding that this practice was consistent with transitions in previous administrations.

Additionally, Meta acknowledged that there were technical issues impacting users’ ability to unfollow these accounts promptly. The company is also addressing concerns regarding blocked searches for political terms on Instagram, which some users interpreted as censorship. Despite the backlash, Meta maintains that no coercive measures were implemented to compel users to follow these accounts.
