Meta to lay off 10% of workforce in AI restructuring
Meta has indeed announced a restructuring tied to its AI push, with plans to cut about 10% of its workforce, or roughly 8,000 jobs, and eliminate about 6,000 open roles. Reports also say the changes could ultimately affect around 20% of the company’s workforce when transfers and other role changes are included.
The layoffs are part of Meta’s broader effort to run leaner and redirect resources toward AI products and infrastructure. The company is also flattening management layers and shifting some employees into AI-focused roles.
According to the reports, the layoffs were set to begin on May 20, 2026. U.S.-based employees affected by the cuts were reported to receive severance, while international packages would vary by country.
This is not Meta’s first major reduction; earlier cuts also hit Reality Labs and metaverse-related teams. The latest round suggests the company is continuing to prioritize AI even at the cost of large-scale workforce reductions.
