Supreme Court Refuses To Modify Directions To Remove Stray Dogs From Public Places
the Supreme Court refused to modify its earlier directions requiring stray dogs to be removed from certain public places and institutions.
The court declined to recall or dilute its November 2025 order that directed local authorities to remove stray dogs from high-footfall public places such as schools, hospitals, educational campuses, sports complexes, bus stands and railway stations.
The bench emphasized public safety and the State’s duty under Article 21 to ensure citizens can access public spaces without fear of dog-bites or related hazards.
The court reiterated that dogs removed from these institutional areas should not be released back there after sterilisation/vaccination but relocated to designated shelters.
The court dismissed petitions challenging the Animal Welfare Board’s SOPs and warned of contempt or disciplinary action if authorities fail to implement the directions.
