Tulsi Gabbard Resigns as Director of National Intelligence, Citing Husband’s Health
Tulsi Gabbard has officially resigned from her position as U.S. Director of National Intelligence (DNI), citing the serious health condition of her husband, Abraham Williams, who has reportedly been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. Her resignation will take effect on June 30, 2026, ending a politically turbulent tenure at the top of America’s intelligence system.
In her resignation letter addressed to President Donald Trump, Gabbard wrote that she could no longer “in good conscience” continue in one of the country’s most demanding national security positions while her husband fights a life-threatening illness. The emotional announcement immediately drew national attention and sympathy across political lines.
Gabbard’s exit, however, comes amid growing reports of internal tensions within the Trump administration. Several media outlets indicated that disagreements over Iran policy and intelligence assessments had weakened her standing inside the White House. Reports suggest that Trump had become frustrated with her relatively cautious assessment regarding Iran’s nuclear threat, which differed from the administration’s more aggressive public posture.
Her 15-month tenure as America’s intelligence chief was marked by constant controversy and political polarization. Once a rising Democratic star and 2020 presidential candidate, Gabbard later left the Democratic Party, endorsed Trump, and became one of the most unconventional Cabinet officials in modern U.S. politics. She was confirmed as DNI in February 2025 and became the first Hindu American and first female military combat veteran to hold the post.
During her leadership, Gabbard aggressively pursued reforms within the intelligence community. Supporters praised her for challenging entrenched bureaucratic structures, reducing the size of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, revoking security clearances of former officials, and declassifying historical government records. Critics, however, accused her of politicizing intelligence agencies and promoting narratives favorable to Trump’s political agenda.
Her foreign policy positions frequently triggered criticism from both Democrats and establishment Republicans. Past remarks viewed as sympathetic toward Russia, her controversial meeting with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, and her skepticism toward U.S. military intervention made her one of Washington’s most debated national security figures.

Deputy DNI Aaron Lukas is expected to serve as acting intelligence chief until a permanent replacement is selected.
