Why US judge blocked Donald Trump birthright citizenship order, Trump Says Will “Obviously” Appeal Birthright Citizenship Ruling

A federal judge has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at redefining birthright citizenship, labeling it “blatantly unconstitutional.” This ruling came from U.S. District Judge John Coughenour during a hearing in Seattle, prompted by a lawsuit filed by the states of Washington, Arizona, Illinois, and Oregon. The judge emphasized that the order violated the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the United States, stating that he could not recall a case so clearly unconstitutional in his over forty years on the bench.

The executive order, signed on Trump’s first day back in office, sought to deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. if neither parent was a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. This directive has sparked multiple lawsuits from civil rights organizations and Democratic attorneys general from various states, arguing that it undermines established constitutional rights.

In response to the ruling, Trump announced his intention to appeal, saying, “Obviously we will appeal it,” during a press conference at the White House. The judge’s decision serves as a significant setback for Trump’s administration as it attempts to implement stricter immigration policies.
