Supreme Court denies relief to Anil Ambani in bank fraud classification case

Supreme Court denies relief to Anil Ambani in bank fraud classification case

The Supreme Court of India dismissed Anil Ambani’s pleas challenging a Bombay High Court order on April 15, 2026, allowing banks to proceed with classifying his loan accounts as fraudulent. This stems from a 2020 forensic audit report flagging alleged irregularities worth about Rs 31,580 crore in Reliance Communications and other ADAG entities, leading to fraud notices in 2024 and classification in September 2025.

A Bombay High Court single judge granted Ambani interim relief on December 24, 2025, citing RBI non-compliance in the audit and severe consequences like restricted financial access. However, a division bench vacated this stay, prompting Ambani’s Supreme Court appeal where senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued it equated to “civil death.”

The bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi, found no grounds to interfere with the High Court’s decision. It noted Ambani’s intent to settle with banks but expressed no view, while clarifying High Court remarks won’t prejudice his ongoing civil suit and urged its swift resolution.
