Congress marches to BJP office in Delhi, demands women’s reservation on current Lok Sabha strength
Congress on Sunday staged a protest in Delhi and marched toward the BJP office, demanding that women’s reservation be implemented immediately on the current Lok Sabha strength of 543 seats. The party accused the Modi government of delaying the quota by linking it to delimitation and the larger seat-restructuring exercise.
What Congress said
Delhi Congress leaders said the women’s quota should not wait for an expanded Lok Sabha and should instead be applied within the existing seats. They argued that the government had attached census and delimitation conditions to postpone implementation.
Why it matters
The protest followed the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, which was meant to operationalise women’s reservation from 2029 alongside an increase in Lok Sabha strength. Congress framed the issue as a question of immediate representation, while the BJP has been accusing the opposition of blocking the bill.
This has become a sharp blame game in Delhi, with both sides holding demonstrations over the same issue. The Congress wants reservation on the existing 543 seats, while the BJP says the opposition derailed a reform meant to strengthen women’s representation.
