Mahadev Betting App Case Update
The Mahadev Betting App case has emerged as a significant scandal involving illegal online gambling, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently intensifying its investigation. Here are the key developments:
CBI Raids: On March 26, 2025, the CBI conducted raids in Chhattisgarh, including at the residence of former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, as part of its investigation into a ₹6,000 crore betting scam linked to the Mahadev online betting app. This follows a corruption case registered two months earlier, consolidating multiple FIRs from various police stations and the economic offences wing (EOW) in Chhattisgarh.
Background of the Case: The Mahadev Betting App, operated by Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal, facilitated illegal betting on various sports and games since its inception in 2018. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has alleged that the app’s operations generated around ₹200 crore daily through a network of franchisee operators who shared profits with the main promoters.
Allegations Against Bhupesh Baghel: The ED has accused Baghel of receiving ₹508 crore in kickbacks from the app’s promoters. These allegations have sparked political controversy, particularly as they surfaced ahead of state assembly elections. Baghel has denied these claims, asserting they are politically motivated.
Extent of Operations: The Mahadev app’s network reportedly extended beyond India to countries like the UAE and Sri Lanka. Investigations have revealed extensive money laundering activities, with assets worth over ₹2,295 crore seized by authorities. The ED has also linked several high-ranking politicians and bureaucrats to the case.
Current Status: As investigations continue, both Chandrakar and Uppal remain fugitives based in Dubai. The CBI’s involvement marks a significant escalation in efforts to address the widespread corruption and illegal activities associated with the Mahadev Betting App.
The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding illegal online gambling and its connections to political figures in India.
