Tuhin Kanta Pandey Appointed as SEBI Chairman

Tuhin Kanta Pandey, the Finance and Revenue Secretary, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a three-year term. This appointment was confirmed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, marking a significant shift in leadership as he succeeds Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure ends on March 1, 2025.

Pandey is a seasoned bureaucrat and a 1987-batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre. He has held key positions in the government, including serving as the Finance Secretary and Secretary of the Department of Revenue. Prior to this, he was the longest-serving Secretary in the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) and also headed the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE).

Privatization Efforts: Pandey played a pivotal role in major privatization initiatives, notably the sale of Air India to the Tata Group and the ongoing divestment process of IDBI Bank.

Economic Reforms: He was instrumental in drafting key economic policies and disinvestment strategies, contributing significantly to India’s fiscal and economic strategies.

Pandey assumes the role at a challenging time for Indian markets, with significant withdrawals by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and bearish market trends. His experience in financial management and governance is expected to help stabilize the market and restore investor confidence.

Industry veterans, such as Navneet Munot, CEO of HDFC Asset Management Company, have welcomed Pandey’s appointment, highlighting his expertise in financial reforms and asset management as key strengths for leading SEBI
