UN approves Ukraine resolution condemning Russia, India and China abstain

UN approves Ukraine resolution condemning Russia, India and China abstain

The recent UN General Assembly session culminated in the approval of a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, marking the third anniversary of the conflict. The resolution received overwhelming support, with 93 votes in favor18 against, and 65 abstentions. Notably, both the United States and Russia voted against this resolution, a significant departure from previous US positions on the matter.

The approved resolution explicitly calls for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and characterizes Russia’s actions as an invasion, directly opposing a competing resolution proposed by the US. This US alternative sought to emphasize peace without acknowledging Russian aggression, but it ultimately failed to gain traction after European nations successfully amended it to include explicit references to Russia’s role in the conflict.

India and China abstained from voting on both resolutions, reflecting their ongoing stance of neutrality while advocating for diplomatic solutions. India’s abstention aligns with its historical approach to not take sides in international conflicts, emphasizing a desire for peace rather than direct condemnation.

This vote represents a notable shift in international dynamics, particularly as the US administration under President Trump has engaged in discussions with Moscow that some European allies view as undermining their collective stance against Russian aggression.
